Welcome to Nga Wai 2017
The philosophy of Whanaungatanga is the foundation of the Nga Wai culture. It reminds us of the importance of positive relationships; being kind to others and respecting others. Our students can only learn and achieve when they feel they belong and are safe to take risks.
We present our students with problems based on real-world contexts that challenge them to be resilient, adaptable and confident in their ideas. From this confidence, they become leaders in their own ways and positively influence others.
Kirsten Wright (Nga Awa), Glen Sneddon (Te Moana), Sean Mead (Nga Roto), Maddison Honor (Waitomo) take a holistic approach to teaching whereby students’ wellbeing and interests are prioritised to encourage them to be self-motivated, curious and critical thinkers.

New Zealand Primary Science Week
As part of New Zealand Primary Science Week we had a science day at school. It was great to see and experience a lot of hands on science. Here some children are extracting DNA out of a tomato and a kiwi fruit.
We also dressed up in a science related manner. Check out some of our costumes.
In our oral language we have been sharing our knowledge on science related concepts. Here we are being shown how and why baking soda and vinegar react.

Nga Wai's Trip to Mindlab
At Mindlab we experienced working in groups using Scratch, a computer programming and coding tool, to create an experiment using a Mother-Board to build an automatic timer. We used the timer to measure which soil was the least or most absorbent. It was difficult to figure out where to put the wires that would make the timer start and stop when the water touched them. It was cool to be in a real science lab where we were left to our own devices and trusted to figure out how to conduct the experiment.

Nga Wai Community News
Nga Wai has a new and exciting inquiry, Hauora (Wellbeing).
We have been constructing our Learning Community. To do this we have been planning and setting up the classrooms, creating a treaty to agree on our rights and responsibilities as learners and investigating how the brain works and how we learn best. Do you know if you are a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner?
We are learning about community and considering ways we can contribute to communities around Hataitai, Wellington and the world. This is a great thing to discuss as a family at home and bring your ideas to school. We’d love to hear them.
