Hataitai School Parents' Group

What is the purpose of the group?
The Hataitai School Parents’ Group (HSPG) work with school management and teachers to maintain, promote and advance the interest and welfare of the School and build upon the school’s close links with its community. It endeavours to provide the School with amenities and equipment and through its activities, maintain and develop the interest and goodwill of parents, friends, students and staff.

We've got a big year planned for 2017, and whether you are keen to join the committee or help with a one-off event, we'd love your help.

Who are we?
We are a group of adults associated with the school and with an interest in supporting the aims of the group – enhancing the school environment, fundraising and community building. The Hataitai School Parents Group acts as the umbrella group for a range of parent groups that operate to support the school including:
  • The Fundraising group;
  •  Our Place/Your Place -  responsible for gardens and the school environment;
  •  Liaison with school sports groups.

New members are welcome to join the group for as long as they would like to participate!  There are no elections or limitations on who may join the group. One of the great things about having new members is the potential for sharing new ideas, we are open to all suggestions!

How do we function?
We generally aim to meet at a home or in the school staff room in the evenings (7.30 – 9.30 pm) once or twice a term, although additional meetings might be co-ordinated if needed prior to an event.  In addition to these meetings, members may undertake other tasks to help organise events or activities with sub-groups set up to assist.  Members are free to opt in or out of each activity in response to their availability and interests.

The group also aims to co-opt other members of the school and wider community to run or support the running of events as needed.  So even if you decide not to join the group – we’d still love your support with an event or activity during the year.

What kind of events / activities are planned for 2017?
In 2017 we will be working with the school to plan a range of events focusing on families, fundraising and parent fun. These include the following
  • School Fair - our major fundraiser is held every 2 years, the next one will be 2018
  • A fun night of entertainment for the adults - similar to the fantastic 'Bavarian night' last year - Term 2 (date tbc)
  • Matariki (June) - a family gathering to celebrate Maori New Year - a really fun evening with food, mini-concert/talks and treasure hunts
  • Our Place, Your Place - school working bee - these are held once a term and are a great thing for families to do together
  • Yummy Fruit Promotion - collect Yummy stickers and cut-out labels (all year round!) and we'll get some free sports gear
  • Calendar Art - your child's artwork turned into calendars, diaries, note cards and notebooks - a fabulous gift for family, with the school raising money at the same time (Term 4)
  • Family Gathering & End of Year Celebration (December) - grab some takeaways, bring a picnic or buy some yummy food at the school and join in the singing

Who decides where the money is spent?
The HSPG work closely with the Principal and the Board of Trustees to set a school wishlist. These items are evaluated against a set of criteria, with higher importance being given to those items which are of educational benefit and those which enhance to overall school environment, as well as those which will benefit the school on an ongoing basis. In general, items which relate to ongoing expenditure (or “opex”) are not funded through fundraising.

For example, in 2013 we helped fund the astroturf, revamped the hall kitchen and bought listening posts for the junior school, amongst other things.
