Develop skills and strategies to calculate, estimate and reason logically

Develop rapid recall of the basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

At Hataitai School our exploration of Maths involves the dynamic teaching and learning at measurement, geometry, statistics, problem solving, logical reasoning, number strategies and knowledge through integrated learning opportunities and real-world contexts.  Our aim is to equip our learners with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed at their current mathematical learning and prepare and encourage them for future study of Maths.

Our aim is for students leaving Hataitai to:

Number Knowledge - Have a strong understanding of basic facts, integers, fractional numbers and patterns within the number system.
Number Strategies - Have an understanding of a broad selection of number strategies and be able to select the appropriate one for given problems.

Other Strands

Have an understanding of units of time, distance, area, volume, capacity, temperature and mass

Have an understanding of stats and probability sufficient to cope with models presented by the main stream media.

Use appropriate statistical tools and models to pose a question, investigate, represent results and draw conclusions to statistical problems

Have an

understanding of shape, space, direction, scale, translation, reflection, rotation, symmetry, tessellation

Application– Apply knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts to real life situations.

Confident – Be unafraid to apply their mathematical skills and knowledge to further education and everyday life.

Problem Solving – Develop the problem solving skills of guess and check, start with the solution and work backwards, predictions, charts and tables, process of elimination, logical statements.

Transition – Have a core foundation of essential maths skills that provides a platform for future maths learning.
