Physical Education

At Hataitai School we want our students to:

Develop appropriate physical skills

As an Active School we believe that regular Physical Activity and Physical Education are essential parts of a balanced curriculum.

Both Physical Education (in its movement and Health components) and Physical Activity are vital tools for helping children develop and expand their key competencies:

  • Thinking
  • Using Language, Symbols and Texts
  • Managing Self
  • Relating to Others
  • Participating and Contributing

We believe that a culture that values sporting achievement already exists at our school and we would like to continue that.   We also wish to promote Physical Activity for the sake of ongoing physical health, and improve students’ knowledge of Healthy routines, nutrition, body care etc.  through positive choices.

Our approach to this philosophy takes some different forms across the school:

At a year 0-3 level,
we want to provide students with a range of quality programmes that are inclusive and cater for differing abilities, and promote wellbeing.

At a year 4-6 level
we want to promote active engagement in Physical Activity.  We also want to introduce children to the concept of competition and competitive skills, but to enjoy participation whether they win or lose.

At a year 7-8 level
We want to provide PA/PE experiences that link to resources and people in the local community. At this stage competition and competitive skills become an active part of the programme as an opportunity to refine abilities and build attitudes that will help them succeed later on in life.

At all levels we want to promote the concept of “personal bests”- that giving a best effort, regardless of result is a success.  While this will take different forms at different levels, it will encourage the less physically-gifted to try and improve and the more physically gifted to excel.

Sports and PE are part of the school programme and various sport and PE fixtures are arranged for classes at all levels during the year.
